Shoulder Impingement

Do I have Shoulder Impingement?

Does it hurt your shoulder to reach above your head? Or to dry your hair when you get out of the shower? This pain is often referred to as ‘shoulder or subacromial impingement syndrome’ and is the most common shoulder issue.

Impingement is often caused by compression of the rotator cuff and ligaments in our shoulder joint. This can originate from working overhead often, such as with car mechanics or painters, or athletes that throw or swing their arms in their sport. It is also very treatable!

There are some varying anatomical causes of this impingement pain, but both physiotherapists and Kinesiologists can perform testing to see the root cause, and treat it! Treatment is often done through a combination of physiotherapy using multiple treatment modalities and active rehab.

Here are a few exercises that may provide some relief for you by strengthening and increasing stability of the shoulder joint:

Side-lying Shoulder External rotation. Lying on your side, with the affected shoulder up. 3 sets of 12 reps.

Shoulder Impingement

Shoulder posterior capsule stretch, for 45s, 3x.

Shoulder Impingement

Wall push ups, 3 sets of 15 wall push ups.
