WHAT IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY?

Chronic pain and inflammation caused by issues in the bone, tendon and soft tissue can be challenging to live with. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy is an effective treatment for lingering injuries and pain resulting from illness. This non-invasive treatment applies a series of low-energy sound pressure waves to mechanically stimulate the body's natural healing process.

It is performed in combination with other physiotherapy treatments, and results in immediate and long-lasting pain-relief and reduced inflammation caused by chronic conditions, helping patients to resume their regular activities.

IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY RIGHT FOR ME?

Focused shock wave therapy is a highly effective treatment option for patients with musculoskeletal conditions and soft tissues injuries experiencing chronic pain.

Benefits of shockwave therapy include:

• Immediate and long-lasting pain-relief

• Reduced inflammation and discomfort

• Accelerate healing

• Restored mobility

• Decreased calcification found in tendons/soft-tissues post injury or surgery

• Scar breakdown/mobilization

HOW IT WORKS

Shockwave Therapy is an add-on, done in conjunction with other physiotherapy treatments to improve results, and is customized to meet the needs of each patient. The therapist will apply the Zimmer Shockwave Enpulse 2 handpiece to the treatment area, releasing a mechanical sound pressure wave that helps to stimulate the formation of new blood vessels, promote circulation and regenerate damaged tissues.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your therapist may recommend the addition of Shockwave therapy during other physiotherapy treatments to see improved results. An initial assessment will be completed and therapy goals will be jointly set with your therapist. Typically, you will be seen twice per week, for a total of 4-6 sessions, depending on the reason for treatment. The treatment area will continue to heal over several months after your sessions.

HOW TO PREPARE

Shockwave Therapy is done in addition to your other physiotherapy treatments as an add-on service. Consent for this treatment is provided during your physiotherapy session.

Whenever starting a new physiotherapy program, bring a list of any medications to your first appointment, along with any relevant X-rays and MRIs. If you’re experiencing pain symptoms beforehand, make a note of them and be sure to tell your therapist ahead of time. If you are involved in an accident claim with ICBC, be sure to get treatment approval before your sessions begin.

POST-SESSION

Most patients feel immediate pain-relief after their first Shockwave Therapy treatment, and will continue to see results after follow-up treatments. Mild tingling or redness may occur, and usually goes away after a day or two.
