The Importance of Staying Active During COVID-19

These are crazy times we are living in and we here at VanCity Physio hope you’re doing well.

While we’re all doing our best to help flatten the curve by staying home and practicing physical distancing, it’s so important we remain active and on top of our physical wellbeing. Not only will this have a positive impact on how our bodies feel, it will also help with mental health. During this time, we remain available to help our clients with our eHealth Service. Just because you’re at home, doesn’t mean you can’t keep on top of your physiotherapy. We also wanted to share some ideas for activities to stay active during COVID-19.

Get Jogging

Even if you have no recent experience with jogging, it’s an amazing way to get out, get some fresh air and maintain your physical fitness. An excellent program to follow for beginners is the Couch to 5k program, which takes complete beginners and puts them through a program geared at getting them running an uninterrupted 5k distance. I recommend using apps like the On the Go Map to chart your running routes. Try to avoid built up areas like Vancouver’s sea wall, as it’s tough to practice physical distancing in these spaces.

Home Yoga

Yoga studios have been hit hard by COVID-19, with Vancouver’s iconic Semperviva studio closing their doors permanently. Many teachers have pivoted to offering online yoga classes, with many of them even doing so for free. With most of us finding ourselves sitting around more often, it’s vital to make sure we’re stretching and looking after our joints. Home yoga is the perfect way to achieve this. All you need is a yoga mat and a relaxed attitude.

Strength Training

You don’t need a gym to do strength training. In fact, there are lots of exercises you can do at home, with minimal equipment. Core exercises such as air squats, push-ups and planks are highly recommended and there’s also lots of other accessory exercises. Do you research and put together a training plan featuring your favourite movements. Use resources like this to discover inspiration for new exercises to incorporate.
