Bodyworker vs. RMT – What’s the Difference (and Which One Do You Need)?

Ever wondered what the difference is between a bodyworker and an RMT? You're not alone. It’s a common question we get at VanCity Physio and a good one! While both help people feel better in their bodies, the paths they take (and the techniques they use) can be quite different.

Let’s break it down in simple terms so you can figure out what’s right for you.

What’s a Bodyworker?

Think of a bodyworker as someone who uses a wide range of touch-based techniques to support overall well-being. This can include everything from:

  • Myofascial release

  • Craniosacral therapy

  • Thai massage

  • Shiatsu

  • Energy work like Reiki

  • Structural integration (like Rolfing)

Bodyworkers often take a more holistic or alternative approach. Some focus on movement patterns or emotional tension in the body, while others work with energy or deep fascia.

Training varies a lot—some practitioners have years of experience and specialized training, while others may have taken shorter courses. There’s no single license or title that governs bodywork in most places, so it’s always worth asking about a practitioner’s background.

What’s a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT)

A Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) is a regulated health professional who has completed formal education and passed licensing exams. In places like British Columbia (and other parts of Canada), RMTs are required to:

  • Complete 2,200+ hours of training

  • Study anatomy, physiology, pathology, and clinical techniques

  • Stay up to date with ongoing education

  • Follow professional and ethical standards

RMTs are trained to treat injuries, reduce pain, improve mobility, and support recovery. Whether you’re dealing with a pulled muscle, chronic pain, or tension headaches, an RMT can help in a more clinical, targeted way.

Bonus: most extended health benefits cover RMT treatments, which isn’t usually the case for general bodywork.

So… Which One Should You Choose?

Here’s a quick way to think about it:

Deep relaxation and energy balancing Bodyworker
Help recovering from injury or pain RMT
A holistic or alternative approach Bodyworker
Treatment that’s insurance-covered RMT
A mix of body + mind support Bodyworker
A therapeutic, clinical-style session RMT

Truth is, there’s no wrong choice it really depends on what your body needs right now. Some of our clients alternate between both depending on how they’re feeling, and that works great too.

Whether you're booking with a bodyworker or an RMT at VanCity Physio, you're in good hands (literally). Both play an important role in supporting health, healing, and feeling better in your own skin.
