SPORTS PHYSIOTHERAPY IN VANCOUVER

Vancouver moves. Between the North Shore trails, the Seawall, the city's run clubs, and a steady stream of UBC athletes and weekend warriors, our sports physiotherapy Vancouver team sees the full range of active patients. We work with athletes at every level to assess injuries quickly and build a return-to-sport plan that holds up. With clinics Downtown and in Fairview, we're close to where most of our patients live and train.

COMMON SPORT INJURIES WE TREAT

Sports injuries split into two camps: acute injuries from a single moment (a rolled ankle, a sudden pull) and overuse injuries that build as training load outpaces the tissue. Our Vancouver sports physio team treats both:

Lower limb: ankle sprains, Achilles tendinopathy, shin splints, runner's knee, IT band syndrome, ACL and meniscus injuries, hamstring strains

Upper limb: rotator cuff issues, frozen shoulder, tennis and golfer's elbow, wrist sprains

Spine and trunk: low back pain, neck strain, rib injuries, groin and hip flexor strains

Post-concussion: dizziness, headaches, and neck pain after sport-related impacts

If it's stopping you from training the way you want to, it's worth getting assessed.

SPORTS PHYSIO FOR RUNNERS, CYCLISTS, & TEAM SPORT ATHLETES

Runners. Whether you're training with a local run club or logging Seawall loops, we treat plantar fasciitis, shin splints, IT band syndrome, and stubborn hip pain. Our Running Lab uses gait analysis to find the mechanical factors behind recurring injuries.

Cyclists. Vancouver cyclists rack up mileage on the Seawall, the North Shore, and the routes out to UBC. We see knee pain tied to bike fit, low back stiffness from long rides, and the neck and shoulder tension that builds over a season.

Team sport athletes. From UBC athletes to recreational soccer, basketball, rugby, hockey, and ultimate leagues, contact and pivoting sports bring ACL and meniscus injuries, ankle sprains, concussions, AC joint issues, and groin strains. Our goal is to get you back to play as fast as is safe — with a staged plan so re-injury doesn't undo your progress.

IS SPORTS PHYSIOTHERAPY RIGHT FOR YOU?

If you’ve recently suffered a sports-related injury, such as a sprain, strain, ligament tear, concussion, compression, or more, you should be considering a sports physiotherapy treatment plan. Re-injury and chronic pain are common in untreated sports injuries, so the quicker you address the problem, the more effective your recovery will be.

Here are some common injuries that sports therapy can treat:

• Sprains

• Tennis elbow

• Golfer’s elbow

• Meniscus tears

• Rotator cuff or shoulder injuries

• Runner’s knee

• ACL or knee ligament sprains

• Groin strain

HOW IT WORKS

Sports physio aids recovery through sport-specific exercises. Methods such as taping, bracing, icing, and ultrasounds can help athletes stay in the game and recover more quickly. Other physiotherapy techniques, such as manual therapy, IMS (dry needling), clinical Pilates, and more may be recommended at the discretion of your physiotherapist.
With effective treatment options, our therapists can:
• Help reduce susceptibility to future sport-related injuries.
• Improve mobility restrictions with personalized exercises.
• Improve overall muscle and ligament health.
• Help peak athletic performance.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Sports physiotherapy can help you recover from recent injuries or return to sport after a long period of inactivity. Your treatment plan will be tailored to your specific injury and diagnosis, but common treatments can include dry needling, shockwave therapy, manual therapy, and electrical modalities. Your treatment plan may also include multiple members of the VanCity Physio team including Kinesiologists and Pilates experts. Our programs always take an active approach to recovery which includes movement, stretching, and at-home exercises.

HOW TO PREPARE

Come to your session in appropriate attire to exercise. Whenever starting a new physiotherapy program, bring a list of any medications to your first appointment, along with any relevant X-rays and MRIs. If you’re experiencing pain symptoms beforehand, make a note of them and be sure to tell your therapist ahead of time.

POST-SESSION

After your session, your physiotherapist will discuss an appropriate timeline for regular maintenance of your one on one sessions. Post-session recovery will depend on your individual program, but it is normal to feel sore, tired, and tender after sports physiotherapy. Depending on your injury, you could be back to your sport within a month. That being said, it’s important to take things slow and listen to your body. Always consult with your physiotherapist before resuming sport.

I recently suffered an injury from playing sports. I had a lot of trouble walking without pain but working with Vancity Physio helped me quickly return to what I love doing most. Injuries don't just affect a person physically, but can take an emotional toll. Having a physio who is knowledgeable in their practice, patient with explaining my condition and being personable to work made all the difference in my full recovery.

I had the pleasure of being personal trained by Ranko Vukovic for a 4 month period prior to an event last year. I was introduced to another viewpoint of what "being in shape" actually is comprised of. He helped me be openminded to an assortment of different exercises/stretches and training material. I was pleased with the results within a short period of time and continue to utilize the tools and suggestions that were taught to me. If anyone is looking for a motivating trainer and overall great guy, I highly suggest him! Thanks so much Ranko!
